Born in Brixton, England in 1935, good-looking Gary Raymond came from an acting family. Born Gary Barrymore Raymond, both his parents were music hall entertainers. The youngest of three sons, his one brother is a twin. He won a scholarship at the age of 11 to Gateway School in Leicaster, then graduated five years later and took on odd jobs as a furrier and clerk while studying drama through the auspices of the London County Council. He was accepted by the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts and trained there until he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in the mid-50s. The darkly handsome youth, whose looks slightly resemble that of John Gavin, also earned quite a few formidable parts in films, most notably as Prince Charles Stuart in The Moonraker (1958), Cliff Lewis in Look Back in Anger (1958), which was originally played by Alan Bates on stage, the title role in the classic The Playboy of the Western World (1962) and as St. Peter in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965). These important roles eventually caught the notice of Hollywood and Gary won a co-starring role opposite Christopher George on the 1966 TV war series "The Rat Patrol" as British Sergeant Jack Moffitt. The show, however, ran for a disappointing two seasons. Primarily a stage player, Gary has made an impressive dent on the London musical scene over the years, originating the role of Georg in "She Loves Me" (1964), as well as appearing in "Irma La Douce" (1958), "Treasure Island" (1973), "Sunday in the Park with George" (1990), "JFK: A Musical Drama" (1997) and was most recently seen in "Finian's Rainbow" (1999). He has been less visible on film and TV since the late 60s. Wife Delena Kidd is also a respected actress who specializes in Shakespeare and Shaw, and the couple have performed together many times on stage, not to mention the popular mini-movies "Scarlett" and "Victoria & Albert". Married since 1961, they have three children -- one daughter, Emily, is also an actress.
