While she visits the earth at night, a group is discovered by foreign botanists and is disturbed by an approaching human special commission. Because of more than hasty takeoff one of the visitors is left behind. The small foreigner is found completely alone on a very foreign planet. Happily the extraterrestrial soon finds a friend and emotional companion in 10-year-old Elliot who discovered him after food in the garden hut of his family searching. During E. T. slowly gets to know the brother of Elliot Michael, his sister Gertie as well as the earth duty, the members of the special commission working day and the night to find the whereabouts of the first visitor of the earth of the space. The wish to go again home is strong in E. T. , and to communicate after in the state being, with Elliot and other, E. T. The beginnings which build an impromptu device to send news home for his people to come and to take up him. But shortly, E. T. becomes severely ill, and because of his special connection Elliot, the young boy also suffers. The situation becomes critical, if the special commission, finally, dazwischenliegt. Till then the whole help can be already too late, and there is no foreign spaceship by view.
Indem sie die Erde nachts besucht, wird eine Gruppe von ausländischen Botanikern entdeckt und durch eine sich nähernde menschliche Sonderkommission gestört. Wegen mehr als eiliges Take-Off wird einer der Besucher zurückgelassen. Der kleine Ausländer findet sich ganz allein auf einem sehr fremden Planeten. Glücklich findet der Außerirdische bald einen Freund und emotionalen Begleiter in 10-jährigem Elliot, der ihn entdeckte, nach Essen in der Garten-Hütte seiner Familie suchend. Während E. T. langsam lernt den Bruder von Elliot Michael, seine Schwester Gertie sowie den Erdzoll, die Mitglieder des Sonderkommissionswerktages und der Nacht kennen, um den Verbleib des ersten Besuchers der Erde vom Weltraum ausfindig zu machen. Der Wunsch, wieder nach Hause zu gehen, ist in E stark. T. , und nach dem im Stande Sein, mit Elliot und anderen, E zu kommunizieren. T. Anfänge, die ein improvisiertes Gerät bauen, um eine Nachricht nach Hause für seine Leute zu senden, um zu kommen und ihn aufzunehmen. Aber in Kürze, E. T. wird ernstlich krank, und wegen seiner speziellen Verbindung Elliot, der junge Junge leidet auch. Die Situation wird kritisch, wenn die Sonderkommission schließlich dazwischenliegt. Bis dahin kann die ganze Hilfe bereits zu spät sein, und es gibt kein ausländisches Raumschiff in Sicht.
