This animated quality is put in medieval times. After the English king dies, leaving no heir in the cemetery of a cathedral in London, a sword seems embedded in an enrolled stone, "Who is a born king thus pulleth this sword of this stone and anvil of rightwise England. " Although many try, nobody can move the sword of the stone. Deeply in the dark woods, the kind, but distracted Merlin the magician begins to inform 11-year-old Arthur, the wart is called, and in the castle lives on Mr. Ector where he is an apprentice-land young nobleman to stocky, silly Mr. Kay — if he does not wash pile of pots and frying pans in the washing-up kitchen.
